Web Application Testing in Asian Banks: Best Practices and State of the Art
The increasing consumer demand and competitive market have pushed for the urgent digitalisation of the banking industry. Part of this digital transformation is the development of complex and secure banking web applications that deal with all the functionalities needed with a high degree of accuracy. QA and testing teams are given added pressure to ensure that the systems released are free from errors and vulnerabilities. While the complexity of the web applications is already a challenge, the banks’ rigid nature and resistance to change make it more difficult for testing teams. Despite the importance of this research problem, there is a paucity in the available literature related to this topic.
The study aims to contribute to knowledge by identifying the current state of the art, challenges, and best practices in web application testing in the banking domain. Primary data was gathered through an interview with a subject-matter expert and survey answers from 24 industry practitioners exposed to web application testing in Asian banks over the last five years. The results show that Asian banks put high importance to security and functional testing and mainly use Agile and Waterfall methodologies in their development process. Among the main challenges include inefficiency in using environment simulators, ineffectiveness of tools, addressing cross-browser compatibility issues, and the bank’s inflexible processes. Among the best practices identified were keeping proper documentation, doing a test coverage analysis, and prioritising cross-browser compatibility testing.
