Smart Aging: Utilization of Machine Learning and Internet of Things for Independent Living

Smart aging utilises innovative approaches and technology to improve the quality of life of older adults, increasing their prospects of living independently.

One of the major concerns the older adults to live independently is “serious fall”, as almost a third of people aged over 65 have a fall each year. Dementia, affecting nearly 9% of the same age group, poses another significant issue that needs to be identified as early as possible. Additionally, Applying biometric security to IoT sensors will enhance confidence in older adults to fully benefit from smart aging. The shortcomings of the prominent smart aging services are addressed in this research which are as follows (1) Fall Detection, (2) Identifying the Onset of Dementia System (IODS), and (3) Enabling older adults friendly biometric security to wearable sensors.

From the publicly available datasets, key features are extracted and novel machine learning algorithms are used to build smart models for the fall detection system, IODS, and biometric system.

This research will help older adults to have more confidence and freedom to live more independently and improve their quality of life.
